Nerve Pain

Nerve pain occurs due to malfunctioning of nerves. It is commonly known as neuralgia.

It is also called a pinched nerve wherein damaged nerves are not able to send regular signals to the brain.

This condition can be treated by the use of some home remedies.

Symptoms –

Numbness, burning sensation, tingling effect, muscle weakness, sharp pain, etc.

Causes-

  1. Improper posture
  2. Regular injured at the same place
  3. Excessive body weight
  4. Nerve suppression

These are the four groups in which nerve pain can be categorized –

  1. Accidental – tissue, muscle or any joint injury/ trauma can lead to nerve damage.
  2. Infections – such as HIV, and AIDS can also cause nerve pain.
  3. Surgery- can also lead to nerve pain due to its suppression or improper functioning.
  4. Deficiency of vitamin B or a thyroid problem.

Home remedies to treat nerve pain-

  1. Epsom salt –

A magnesium sulfate bath for 30 min can help to prevent sciatic pain due to nerves.

  1. Apple cider vinegar-

It has magnesium, phosphorus, and calcium-like minerals. It has anti-inflammatory properties that can help to get away from nerve pain.

  1. Hot and cold compress –

            Application of a hot bottle/towel  

            can reduce muscle spasms and a 

            a cold pad/ ice pack reduces the 

            pain.

  1. Turmeric -it has curcumin and its properties. It also shows antinociceptive properties. It also inhibits COX 2 and thereby stops the trigger point of pain.
  1. White Willow tea-

Willow has salicylic acid therefore it works as an analgesic.

  1. Exercises –

Exercise can trigger the release of the body’s natural pain reliever endorphins. Nerve pain caused by diabetes can be resolved by exercise as it also regulates blood pressure and increases blood flow.

  1. Alcohol –

This is a must to avoid because alcohol can cause nerve toxicity resulting in nerve pain.

  1. Rest-

A good sleep time can maintain painless nights. A good circadian rhythm must be followed to avoid high peak night pain.

  1. Applying oils-

Geranium oil and vegetable oil can also be helpful in pain relief.

  1. Saffron –

Helps to deal with hyperalgesia. Saffron with amitriptyline is used for the treatment of the same.

  1. Basil-

Tulsi / Ocimum sanctum has a saponin content in it which helps to reduce oxidative stress and inhibitor calcium levels which further help in inhibiting nerve pain/ damage.

  1. Ergonomic workstation –

A workplace that helps the person to prevent pain by comfortable equipment and procedures.

Properties of herbs required which can help to minimize nerve pain-

  1. Antioxidant
  2. Anti-inflammatory
  3. Calcium inhibiting
  4. Neuroprotective

Consult a doctor when the frequency and duration of pain are recurring and not bearable.

Medical attention is required in the below scenarios when nerve pain can be a serious issue –

  1. When there is a problem in holding/ gripping objects or there is a dropping of things.
  2. When there is a sign of a limb or body area collapse.
  3. When the nerve pain/ damage affects the bladder.

Test to perform to make sure about the seriousness of nerve pain –

  1. Blood count and inflammation sedimentation rate 
  2. Thyroid test
  3. Vitamin B level
  4. Diabetes
